Dear PWNCR Members and Friends,
We would like to thank everyone who joined us at our Open House on the 18th. Special thanks to Lisa Foulger for facilitating the ice-breaking session, and to Gail Nystrom for introducing us to the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation and the lovely girls who opened up about their experiences and got many of us in tears after helping us tap into our own histories.

An Exploration of Dementia

An Exploration of Dementia
Is someone you love at risk for or already struggling with dementia?
Are you ready to learn how to best understand and support them?
As a dementia educator and caregiver coach for over 23 years, Katya De Luisa provides information and training centered on holistic approaches to eldercare. Her book, “Journey through the Infinite Mind: The Science and Spirituality of Dementia”, has been published in both English and Spanish and is a forerunner of its kind.
Katya is presently the coordinator of the volunteer Dementia Education Initiative for Rural Costa Rica for Tico families living in outlying areas of the country.
After this event you will be able to:
1. Identify causes and symptoms of dementia
2. Learn about healthy brain function and how it’s affected by dementia
3. Understand dementia behaviors
4. Value the importance of heart-based communication
5. Empathize with what the person with dementia is experiencing
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Katya De Luisa is considered to be one of Costa Rica’s early ex-pat pioneers. She’s resided here since 1980 and is a nationalized Costa Rican citizen.
She is an artist, author, and freelance writer whose articles focus on healthy aging and dementia.

After the event you will have the option to stay for lunch at Tin Jo Asian Restaurant – a great networking opportunity with other members and friends of the PWNCR! We will take lunch orders during the event but please feel free to peruse Tin Jo’s GENERAL MENU, VEGETARIAN MENU and GLUTEN-FREE MENU here!
The Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation
During the event you will be able to:
- Participate in an artisan fair and buy crafts made by people who are part of CRHF initiatives
- Interact with members of CRHF communities at exhibits demonstrating how goals are met
- Understand how the Spiral Model of Development is the CRHF’s guiding principle
- Enjoy three short theater presentations
- Learn from groups of children, youth, teachers and soccer players
- Receive a gift
Donations start at $250 per person (includes dinner). Payment can be made via bank transfer, SINPE Movil or PayPal payment.
